Wallingford Item No.: 18 No. of Sheets: 2
Title: Manuscript extract from publication: 'Hedge's Wallingford, Volume I, p. 149 - 150'
Content: Extract concerning a circular urn of light brown coloured ware with a coating of red found at the back of the residence of Mr C.A. Barrett in the High Street of Wallingford, in November 1875. Workmen working in the stable came across the pot and broke it. Inside was a black foul-smelling material, which, when put under the microscope, was found to contain bones. The pot was decorated around the rim. Either side of the urn was found a human skeleton in a contracted, if not sitting, position. A small coin was also discovered close to the urn, which disintegrated when touched. Manning notes that Hedges thought the coin was pre-Roman. Further fragments of pottery urns without ornament were found and a wedge-like flint implement. Hedges did not think the other urns were intended to be sepulchral.
