Wittenham | Item No.: | 39 | No. of Sheets: | 3 |
| Title: | Manuscript extract from publication: 'Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries, Second Series, Volume II, pp.133 - 135, 5 June 1862.' | ||||
| Content: | The extract is entitled 'Long Wittenham'. The author (J.Y.Akerman) mentions that he was contacted by Reverend J.C. Clutterbuck who informed him that human skeleton with an iron knife blade had been discovered by a man engaged in draining a field about two furlongs west of the cemetery (a report of which he wrote in Archaeologia Volume XXXVIII, p.327 and Volume XXXIX, p.135). The author went to excavate the site in the spring, opening trenches from north to south. He found two skeletons, one with an iron knife lying in its lap and concluded that the site was an Anglo Saxon cemetery. Further excavations revealed several graves (ten in all). The objects found were: three blue glass beads; a pair of silver earrings; a pair of metal pins probably once connected by a chain; a buckle of plated metal. There follows a list of the graves and which objects were found in each, with descriptions. | ||||
