Wallingford | Item No.: | 27 | No. of Sheets: | 1 |
| Title: | Extract cut from newspaper: 'The Reading Mercury, 8 February, 1890' and adhered to the sheet. With notes written below the extract. | ||||
| Content: | The extract is entitled 'Wallingford' and concerns a meeting of the Numismatic Society, where Mr W.R. Davies exhibited a selection of British, Roman and English coins discovered in the neighbourhood of Wallingford. Among the coins was an aureus of Eppillus. Includes a description of the coin. Written in pencil below the extract is a refeence to the Evans Numismatic Catalogue in the British Museum. The note below the extract is written on a strip of unlined paper adhered to the sheet. It is headed 'Information from Mr T.H. Powell, 1919.' It corrects the newspaper extract, mentioning that the coins of Eppillus in the Davies collection bought by Sir John Evans was reported as coming from Wallingford, but in fact came from the hills above Watlington. The note adds that the Cleeve hoard consisted of 13 coins, one of which is in the Powell collection, now in the Ashmolean Museum. | ||||
