Eynsham Item No.: 11 No. of Sheets: 1
Title: Typed note based on information from Mr F.Ellis, 59 Berkeley Road, Bishopston, Bristol.
Content: Concerning a lost inscribed Roman tombstone, which Mr Purdue, a chemist at Witney, had a note of. The inscription (translated by Reverend Gerald Moutrie of Southleigh) read: 'To the Gods of the Shades, Titus Aurelius Appolinaris, By birth a Syrian of Apamea, lived 37 years. Titus Aurelius Augustinianus erected this to his Freedman who deserved well of him.' The stone was lost, but there was slight remembrance of an association with Eynsham and Eynsham Hall, the residence of the Mason Family. Mr E.T. Leeds has written some notes on the inscription at the foot of the page, and a memo to 'enquire at Eynsham Hall.'
