Content: | Report of a communication by the President of the Society (the Bishop of Carlisle) concerning the discovery of Alchester Roman station near Bicester. Mentions that the workmen belonging to Mr Penrose discovered various architectural features (8ft high bauk; Bed of ashes mixed with human bones; Pavement covered with fine gravel; Walls about three feet in height at North and South; Tessallated pavement; Floor of cemented brick below pavement; Pilasters) and Roman objects (Bricks and tiles; Tessallae, various colours; 141lbs of lead; Pieces of iron, shapeless and decayed; Piece of brass; Pieces of glass; Ivory pin or stylus; Jaw of human skeleton with teeth; Pieces of timber resembling charcoal). |
