Content: The text is headed: 'Notes on some Pits near Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire. By H.B. Woodward, F.G.S., Geological Survey.' A note at the foot of the transcript claims that this was 'Printed as appendix iv to an account of dene-holes (pits) found at Hangman's Wood, Cray, Essex.' Concerning the pits and the objects found in and around them (Chipped flint arrow-heads; Flint scrapers; Fossils; Coins; Portions of two human skulls - cranium only; Bones and teeth of animals; Fragments of black pottery; Fragments of black, red and brown pottery; One piece of flint; Red quartzite pebbles; Pieces of burnt wood), as well as the geology of the areas.
