| Title: | Manuscript extract from newspaper: 'The Times, Friday October 5th 1860, Page 4, Column 6, letter to the Editor of the Times from Mr W. Winwood Reade of the Conservative Club, St. James' Street.' | ||||
| Content: | The letter gives an account of its authors' descent into a deep well in Ibsden to investigate its antiquity. This inquiry was instigated after the well was brought to the public's attention when a child was thrown down there by its mother, Ann Whittock, and rescued unharmed. As he was lowered, he noticed steps cut carefully into the wall and speculated that this was not a well at all, but the entrance to a subterranean tunnel (possibly leading to the church). He could not see the bottom of the well as he was stood on a large pile of wood that had accumulated there over the years. He closes his letter by opening the subject for discussion. | ||||
