| Content: | Headed: 'Extract from a letter written by the Reverend Greville J. Chester to Mr James Parker, dated May 20, 1886'. Letter sent to inform Parker of the existence of a Roman villa at Hinksey. Chester explains how in 1849 or 1850, when he was still an undergraduate, he found pottery, including Samian ware, in a field above one of the little valleys which run up from the valley of the Thames. At the time he mentioned it to Dr Wilson, who was president of the Royal Archaeological Institute, and the pair of them went out three times and had small excavations carried out on the site. Wilson found there the foundations of limestone walls, portions of tessellated pavement, a nearly perfect vase of dark brown pottery (which Chester gave to the Ashmolean Museum, but did not remember seeing when he made a catalogue of the Roman things in the collection). | ||||
