Chastleton Item No.: 3 No. of Sheets: 9
Title: Manuscript extract from publication: 'Journal of the Anthropological Institue, Vol. X, p.124'.
Content: Report by Mr John E. Price with two notes appended by Mr H.C. Coote. The main body of the text refers to the Roman camp at Chastleton. It includes an explanation of how the site came to be excavated by the author and his colleagues and goes on to give a detailed description of the site (Ramparts built of massive blocks of oolite; Pits; Trenches). It discusses the age of the camp and the opinions of past local historians as well as the objects that were found there (Deposits of pottery; Deposits of burnt bones; Deposits of charcoal; Bone pin; Flint flake; Burnt pebbles; Various burnt shells (chiefly Terebratuloe); Animal bones (identified by Rolleston as domestic swine, ox, sheep or goat, horse or ass and water rat)). It also mentions the nature of the ancient trees around the site and their use in antiquity. A page has been inserted by Mr Percy Manning which appears to be a transcript by him of a note sent from Professor G. Rolleston to Mr John E. Price identifying various bones from the site. Mr Price refers to this note by Rolleston in his text - the transcript is a substitue for the original note. The text goes on to discuss the nature of human occupation at the site and its situation on the confines of three counties: Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire and Worcestershire. The two notes appended to the text by Mr Coote include Latin extracts from: 'Treaties' by Siculus Flaccus, Faustus et Valerius and others in Lachman's edition of the 'Gromatici Veteres', 2 vols. 8vo. Berlin 1848-52' (Note 1) and 'Ex libris Magoris et Vegoiae', Lachman, p.350' (Note 2). The first note is relevant to the methods of marking territory under Roman occupation and the deposits found in the ramparts of the camp. The second note discusses the purpose of planting various trees in Roman society. Publication reference of the extract written by Mr Percy Manning and adhered to the top of the first page. Also refers to Oxfordshire Victoria History, Volume II, p.312-313, which describes the site briefly.
