| Title: | Cutting from newspaper: 'Newbury Weekly News, 1871', adhered to unlined backing paper. | ||||
| Content: | Cutting entitled 'Curious Discovery at Letcombe Castle'. The newspaper reference is written below the cutting. Recounts the discovery of a grave at Letcombe Castle by Mr John S. Phene, a member of the British Archaeological Association who was making an archaeological inspection of the earthworks in Oxfordshire and the neighbouring counties. Describes Mr Phene's excavation of the grave after finding a small stone level with the turf and which was foreign to the locality. The stone transpired to be the cone-shaped roof of the grave which contained fragments of human bones, flint scrapers, remnants of what was possibly an umbo of a shield and a small fragment of an urn or a drinking cup.The article goes on to describe Mr Phene's transactions with the owner of the land, Mr James Palmer, and also discusses the possible significance of the grave. | ||||
