Wallingford | Item No.: | 16 | No. of Sheets: | 1 |
| Title: | Drawing on tracing paper adhered to the sheet with a note and a manuscript extract from a publication next to it. | ||||
| Content: | Drawing of a bronze spear head. The note indicates that the drawing was traced from a sketch by Reverend J.C. Clutterbuck in the volume of drawings entitled 'Primeval Antiquities' in the Library of the Society of Antiquaries, dated 8 March 1869. The note also mentions that the spear head was found in the Thames below Wallingford. There is a reference to the 'Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries, Second Series, Volume IV, p.280, 8 April, 1869'. Below this is an extract from the publication: 'John Evans' Ancient Bronze Implements, p.321'. It mentions that Mr J.Y. Akerman exhibited a drawing of a bronze leaf shaped spear head with a socket and rivet holes which was dredged from the Thames at Wallingford. The drawing was by Reverend J.C. Clutterbuck, who said in a letter accompanying it that other spear heads and bronze celts had been found near the same place, which may have been the old ford at Wallingford. It also mentions that part of the wood from the original shaft still remained in the socket. | ||||
