Content: | The sheet is headed 'Abingdon'. Extracts from two letters (15 June 1865 and 21 December 1865) communicated to the society by Mr. J.Y. Akerman. Concerning the discovery by workmen digging the foundation of a house at the north end of Fore Street, St Helens', of herring bone masonry foundations. In the second extract, Akerman adds that he sends a sketch by his friend Mr. Clutterbuck of the remains in situ. In brackets, Manning describes the woodcut of the sketch in the publication. Akerman lists the following items as having been found at the site: Earthen vases; Second-brass coin of Trajan; Denarius of Philip; Small brass of Constantine; Animal bones. A final note on the second page observes that the pottery was probably produced in kilns at Summingwell. |
