| Title: | Newspaper cutting adhered to lined backing paper: 'The Times, 12 August, 1893'. | ||||
| Content: | Letter from Mr Walter Money, F.S.A., Local Secretary for Berkshire for the Society of Antiquaries, London, to the Editor of the Times. Entitled 'Discovery of Extensive Evidence of Roman Occupation in Berkshire'. Mentions that Mr Hewett of North Field Farm, Long Wittenham, alerted Mr Money's attention to the existence of ancient pottery on the farm. Money went to investigate and found that the farm was the site of an 'extensive Roman town or station'. The site is opposite the Roman station at Dorchester and not far from the Anglo Saxon cemetery excavated by Mr J.Y. Akerman. The letter recounts how Mr Hewett dug a small shaft in the field and discovered a Roman well from which he pulled four whole Roman vases, a small vessel of red ware, the base of a Samian bowl and a large variety of fragmentary Roman pottery. The text goes on to describe the site and the results of further exploration there. Concludes by saying that Mr Hewett had employed a professional surveyor to make a plan of the ground so that after the harvest they could learn more about the site. | ||||
