| Title: | Manuscript extract from publication: 'Hedge's Wallingford, Volume I, p.149'. With additional notes below the extract. | ||||
| Content: | Concerning a Roman urn with handles and a little ornamentation found in 1859 in Wallingford Castle grounds while forming a road. The urn was encased in a small arched recess constructed of thin red bricks and tiles, which was filled with charcoal and small bones. Embedded in it was the skull of a rabbit. Below this extract is a reference to a publication: 'Berkshire Victoria History, Volume I, p.216' and also a note which looks like it may have been added by Mr E.T. Leeds. The note mentions that the urn was actually a medieval three legged cooking pot, buff ware, with green glaze inside. It contained a rabbit skull embedded in charcoal. Leeds saw the pot on 29 June 1910. | ||||
