Wittenham Item No.: 38 No. of Sheets: 3
Title: Manuscript extract from publication: 'Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries, Second Series, Volume II, pp.37 - 38, 5 December 1861.'
Content: The extract is entitled 'Long Wittenham'. Reports a communication to the society by Reverend J.C. Clutterbuck through Mr J.Y. Akerman concerning sepulchral remains found at Long Wittenham near Abingdon. Accompanying the communication was a sketch of a small urn found with the remains, which showed it to be a Roman drinking cup. The report goes on to say that in May 1861 four skeletons were discovered at Dry Lease in Long Wittenham. Describes each excavated burial in detail. The items found with the skeletons were: a small coin of Constantine and a small earthen vase. A few yards from the interments were found two funereal urns (both containing bones and charred bones) with a smaller urn resting on them and rude flint knives. A trench was also discovered nearby. Beneath the extract a note by Manning mentions that the site of the discoveries is marked on the 6 inch Ordnance Survey map as being about 270 yards east of Pearith's Farm.
